Intermediate level -- Water Quality Analysis (ArcView Version)
Changes in land use towards more urbanised or otherwise modified environments can lead to degradation of catchment basins which may be reflected in local water courses. By combining field work with base data and using GIS technology, students can investigate this issue in terms of habitat, water quality, biological diversity and litter accumulation.

Once data has been acquired from field sampling, initial GIS tasks include designing a base map of the study area and adding the sample locations to it. Students will perform data entry to relate their sample data to the map. They will display aspects of this data using thematic mapping techniques.

Using these maps and data, students can then report on the spatial variation of the health of the creek and suggest management strategies to improve it.
