Intermediate Level -- Pest Plant Species Invasion (ArcView Version)
This example focuses on an invasion of African boxthorns - a recognised problem in many rural areas of South Australia. Use of a hand held GPS receiver to record field data can be introduced in this project, or a prepared data set can be used instead.

The location and distribution of pest plant species in a local area can be profitably studied using GIS mapping and analysis techniques.

Using local data layers and the field measurements, students will be guided through the processes for creating a base map, importing field data into the GIS environment and viewing that data on a map. They will then construct a thematic map and associated graph and use query functions to analyse plant characteristics in consideration of their location near other physical features.

Students are encouraged to consider the most appropriate format for reporting their results, and to make recommendations for management strategies based on their findings.
